Our reference verses are 1 Corinthians 3:16-17- Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and [that] the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? 17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which [temple] ye are.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20– What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [which is] in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? 20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

I am actually struggling with this topic because obviously I am not healthy, I am actually obese and I have a poor immune system hence a need for me to take supplements ( check out this for the supplements I use–  to maintain the energy and strength my body needed to perform the tasks at hand.

So I was asking the Lord, what will I say to these students? (this was my manuscript when I was invited to speak before a group of students on the topic same as the title of this post) And then the Lord reminded me, that his grace is sufficient and we are comforted so that we can comfort our brethren.

I would like to speak to you about the importance of a healthy body.

Firstly, in 1 Corinthians 3:16-17, we are told that our body is the temple of the Holy Spirit. If our body is the temple of the Spirit then it is the temple of God, tayo ang sanktyaryo o tahanan ng Diyos. And we know na the temple of God is holy. We were actually given a glimpse of it in Isaiah 6:1-6-

“In the year that King Uzziah died, I saw the Lord, high and exalted, seated on a throne; and the train of his robe filled the temple. Above him were seraphim, each with six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their feet, and with two they were flying. And they were calling to one another:

“Holy, holy, holy is the Lord Almighty;
the whole earth is full of his glory.”

At the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke.

“Woe to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the Lord Almighty.”

Then one of the seraphim flew to me with a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar.”

How awesome is that? And know that the seraphim are creatures without sin yet in the presence of the holy God they covered themselves. And Isaiah fell literally as he saw God’s glory in great display.

If then we are the temple of God, should we defile the house of the King? Hindi di ba?..then remember that your body is the King of king’s temple, so do not defile it, how?

Of course, do not eat anything that will make it unhealthy, do not do things that are not acceptable to the King such as smoking, drinking, sexual immorality like premarital sex and the list goes on.

Secondly, in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, we are told that we were bought with a high price. Let us go back to this point later because this is also related to having a healthy soul.

Let me tell you, how did I become obese? In my defense, I am born chubby but at least I maintained a normal weight until I went through an operation last 2009 because of ovarian cyst. My body mass changes from then on and last 2014 I went through another operation, this time they removed my right ovary, right fallopian tube and appendix. With only a little remaining ovary, I got hormonal imbalance when I tried losing weight.

You see, there are instances out of our control which make a person unhealthy. What am I trying to point out here? Well, wag tayong maging judgmental; because sometimes dahil merong may sakit o di kaya obese or sobrang payat eh sasabihin natin na hindi siya committed sa pangangalaga ng tahanan ng Panginoon. We should apply lessons we learn to ourselves not to our ‘katabi’.

Now, let’s tackle naman having a healthy soul. Here, let us link this topic to the second point in having a healthy body which I set aside a while ago.

So, we were bought with a price! What does that mean and how is it related sa healthy soul?

Here our reference verse is Ephesians 2:1-4. A person cannot have a healthy soul unless he is made alive in Jesus Christ. Having a saving relationship with Jesus Christ is the prerequisite for a healthy soul. Why?

In Ephesians 2:1, a person who is not born again through Jesus Christ is considered DEAD! PATAY! Alam niyo ang patay di ba? Kahit anong pakain mo dyan, hindi na yan magiging healthy, ni hindi nga rin unhealthy eh kasi he is DEAD!

A person will never have a healthy soul unless he has Jesus Christ in his life.

So kapatid kung ikaw yong hindi mo pa talaga kilala si Jesus Christ let me tell you now who he is and what He has done.

A person who does not know Christ is dead in his trespasses, kahit po anong gawin niya, he is inclined to do evil or sin against God, not even his good works will be merited para po makapunta siya sa tinatawag na langit o buhay na walang hanggan dahil sabi ng Panginoon sa kanyang salita, maging ang kanyang mabubuting gawa ay basahan sa paningin ng Diyos.

But praise God! Out of his love, pinadala po Niya si Hesu Kristo.

Now let us link it to the second point kanina, we were bought with a price that is the blood of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

If you have been a Christian for a long time already, makikita natin yong difference nung bago ka palang na kristyano sa matagal ka ng kristyano.

Why? It is because of the food we feed our souls.

Remember, pag bago kang kristyano, you eat God’s word daily, or every minute, yon bang may natikman kang masarap na pagkain for the first time at gusto mong ulit uliting namnamin, ganun din sa Word of God.

But, unfortunately, as time goes by parang nagsasawa ka or tinatamad na, which is hindi maganda for our soul.

In Matthew 4:4, the Lord Jesus himself said “Man shall not live by bread alone but in every word that comes from the mouth of  God”.

And if you are a christian na matagal na, do not settle for milk but look for solid foods kaya ka nagsasawa eh kasi dapat nagkakarne ka na pero until now naggagatas ka pa rin.

Deepen you study in the word of God. Feast on His word daily, namnamin through meditation and devotion.

I am reminded of a sin na hindi masyadong nabibigyan ng pansin at seemingly okay lang siya eh but in God’s word it is actually a sin, it is called gluttony or overeating. Now who’s guilty? Haha!

There are a lot of verses that tackles gluttony, but I considered Proverbs 23:2, mabigat kasi ito, it says—“put a knife in your throat if you are given to gluttony”.

Philippians 3:19—19” Whose end is destruction, whose God is their belly, and whose glory is in their shame, who mind earthly things.)

Ipinasok ko siya dito kasi gluttony has something to do with the condition of the soul.

According to the bible gluttons are actually after satisfying the desire of their flesh which is through food.

Instead of finding comfort in God, gluttons turn to food for comfort kaya mayroong ‘comfort foods’. Kaya may mga lasenggo, may mga addict. Because they have little or no faith at all in God that they thought the best way to deal with problems is to set it aside or find solutions through addiction.

Okay, so be warned and repent!

Aside from eating God’s Word, meron din yong tinatawag na exercise of faith.

In 1 Timothy 4:8 it says– For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.

What do we mean by this? After eating God’s Word, it should be practice or applied in life, we should live godly- lives.

In addition, we should also share the food we have, let us also share God’s word especially the gospel, as it is the great commission, we are commanded to preach the word.

In the practical sense naman, having a healthy body will complement the healthy soul and vice versa. You cannot have a healthy body when you do not have a healthy soul. Pag hindi healthy ang soul mo it affects your body, by experience I can attest to this. While it is difficult to have a healthy soul when you do not have a healthy body. How can you do quiet time and read the bible when you are tired and restless either because of overworking or overeating. In the same way pag may sakit ka, it is difficult to be at rest in his presence.

Our conclusion is, to be healthy both ways. And remember, His grace is sufficient and through Jesus Christ we can do all things!
